Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
